This rating does not let you fly through cloud. It does not replace an instrument rating.

Is VFR OTT the same as IFR?

No. VFR OTT is not the same as IFR.

A VFR Over-the-Top Rating does not let you fly through cloud, fly in instrument meteorological conditions, or operate as an IFR pilot.

It gives you limited VFR privileges above cloud when the conditions meet the rules. If your goal is full instrument flying privileges, you will need an Instrument Rating.

Do I need a Private Pilot Licence before starting VFR OTT training?

Yes. For this training path, you must already hold a Private Pilot Licence.

You also need to meet the medical and age requirements for the rating before it can be added to your licence.

What are the VFR OTT requirements in Canada?

To earn a VFR Over-the-Top Rating, you need to meet the required knowledge, experience, and skill standards.

The main training requirement is:

15 hours of dual instrument time
Up to 5 hours may be completed as instrument ground time

What weather conditions do I need for VFR OTT flight?

VFR OTT has specific weather and operating rules.

You need to meet requirements for:

Daytime cruise flight

Suitable destination weather
No thunderstorms or precipitation in the destination forecast conditions required by the rule
