Meet the Medical and Language Requirements
International students must meet the required aviation medical and English language standards before beginning flight training.
Canadian Aviation Medical
You will need a Canadian Aviation Medical completed by a Transport Canada-approved Civil Aviation Medical Examiner. Find an approved medical examiner.
English Language Requirements
Students must demonstrate English ability at an operational level. Adventure Aviation accepts the following minimum scores:
- TOEFL: 94
- IELTS Academic: 7
- CLB/CELPIP: 9
Once enrolled, students must also pass an Aviation Language Proficiency Demonstration. Learn more about the language proficiency demonstration.
Complete Your Admission and Insurance Requirements
After your application and required documents have been reviewed, you will attend a formal meeting with our Chief Flight Instructor or their delegate.
Once your application is approved, a $25,000 deposit and a PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) are required.
Mandatory Medical Insurance
All international students must purchase private health insurance before arriving in Canada. Students who meet the eligibility requirements may also qualify for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan.

Canadian Aviation Medical
A Canadian Aviation Medical from a doctor certified by Transport Canada is required for Canadian licences and ratings.

Private Pilot License FAQ
PPL stands for Private Pilot Licence. It is one of the main starting points for people who want to learn to fly for personal use and build a foundation for future aviation training.
You must be at least 17 to receive the licence. A Student Pilot Permit can begin earlier.
You need a Category 3 medical for this training path.
Your course is built around:
- 45 hours minimum aircraft time
- 3 hours simulator time
- 10 hours additional instructor time
- 40 hours ground school
Still, many students train beyond the minimum hours.
Ground school includes:
- Air Law
- Meteorology
- Navigation
- General Knowledge
The Private Pilot Licence is currently priced from a minimum-course estimate based on minimum hour requirements. Your total may be higher if you need more training time.
