Licenses

We hold the designation of a Learning Institute, enabling us to welcome International Students. Additionally, this designation permits students pursuing their Commercial License to be eligible for Student Loans.

Private pilot License (PPL)

  • Minimum aircraft time: 45 hours
  • Simulator time: 3 hours
  • Additional Instructor time: 10 hours
  • Ground school: 40 hours

The national average hours for the PPL is around 65 hours total.  Extra time occurs as each student learns at a different rate and has a different schedule.

Private pilot License (PPL)

Prerequisites

  • Minimum 17-years-old (flight test can be held on your birthday)
    • You can start younger as the Student Pilot Permit (solo, with supervision; permit can be issued at 14-years-old). We do not recommend starting any younger than 14
  • Category 3 Medical Certificate as issued by Transport Canada
    • If planning to move forward to the Commercial License, we recommend the Category 1 Certificate, which defaults to the Category 3 after a year
  • Working knowledge of English and a desire to learn

Requirements

  • Aircraft time broken into 17 hours of dual-instruction, 12 hours of solo, 5 hours of instrument time (in aircraft and simulator), and 5 hours solo cross-country (with at least one that is 150 nautical miles)
  • Ground school broken into instruction on Air Law, Meteorology, Navigation, and General Knowledge
  • Pre-Solo Student Pilot Permit and Radio Operator’s Restricted Certificate (Aeronautical)
  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada written and flight test

Commercial Pilot License

  • Minimum aircraft time: 55 hours
  • Simulator time: 10 hours
  • Additional Instructor time: 15 hours
  • Ground school: 80 hours

The Commercial Pilot course hours also include a Night Endorsement. With this course, you could also complete your Multi-engine Rating and Instrument Rating at the same time for cost savings.

Commercial Pilot License

Prerequisites

  • Private Pilot Licence
  • Minimum 18-years-old (flight test can be held on your birthday)
  • Category 1 Medical Certificate as issued by Transport Canada
  • Working knowledge of English

Requirements

  • Minimum 200 hours of total flight time and 100 hours pilot-in-command time, including 20 hours of cross-ountry
    • Note that all previous flight time counts toward the Commercial Pilot course
    • Time Building may be required to reach the time requirements
  • Aircraft time broken in 35 hours of dual instruction, 10 hours of advanced dual instruction (including at least 3 hours of cross-country), 25 hours of instrument time (in aircraft and simulator), 5 hours of dual night, 30 hours of solo flight time, 25 hours of general practice (including air work and radio communication), and 5 hours of solo night
  • Solo straight line cross country of at least 300 nautical miles with landings at 3 airports other than the departure airport
  • Ground school broken into instruction on Air Law, Meteorology, Navigation, and General Knowledge
  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada written and flight test

Recreational Pilot Permit

Prerequisites

  • Minimum 16-years-old (flight test can be held on your birthday)
  • Minimum Category 4 Medical Certificate as issued by Transport Canada

Requirements

  • Recreational pilot flight training to be held under the direction and supervision of a flight instructor, rating in aeroplanes operating with a Certificate of Airworthiness
  • 15 hours of dual-instruction flight time, including a minimum of 2 hours cross-country flight time
  • 5 hours of solo flight time
  • Pre-solo Student Pilot Permit and Radio Operator’s Restricted Certificate (Aeronautical)
  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada written and flight test. For this reason, enrollment at an accredited Private Pilot Ground School program is recommended

Ratings

Night Rating

  • Minimum aircraft time: 15 hours
  • Simulator time: 2 hours
  • Additional Instructor time: 2 hours

Extend your flying day, especially for winter flying or use the Night Rating as a start to your commercial pilot course.

Night Rating

Prerequisites

  • Must hold a Private Pilot Licence

Requirements

  • Aircraft time broken into 10 hours of dual instruction (including 5 hours of night training, 2 of which are cross-country), 5 hours of instrument training, and 5 hours solo at night
    • 5 hours of instrument training will carry over from the Private Pilot License course, totalling 10 hours
  • Meet the skill requirements in accordance with the Flight Instructor Guide – (TP 975E) as determined by Transport Canada.

VFR Over-The-Top Rating

  • Minimum aircraft time: 11 hours
  • Simulator time: 2 hours
  • Additional Instructor time: 2 hours

The Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Over-The-Top Rating will give you the option to fly over the clouds, as a scenic and safe alternate to low-level flying, to your destination.

VFR Over-The-Top Rating

Prerequisites

  • Minimum 17-years-old (flight test can be held on your birthday)
  • Minimum Category 3 Medical Certificate as issued by Transport Canada
  • Must hold a Private Pilot Licence.

Requirements

  • Acquire a standard of knowledge in accordance with the Flight Instructor Guide – VFR OTT (TP 12775)
  • Aircraft time broken into 15 hours of dual instrument time
    • A maximum of 5 hours may be instrument ground time
  • Training in accordance with the Flight Instructor Guide – VFR OTT Rating (TP 12775)
  • Reach the level of skill specified in the Flight Instructor Guide – VFR OTT (TP 12775)

Instrument Rating

  • Minimum aircraft time: 20 hours
  • Simulator time: 15 hours
  • Additional Instructor time: 10 hours

Instrument Rating

Prerequisites

  • Must hold a Private Pilot Licence
  • Must have completed 50 hours of Cross-Country Pilot in Command (PIC)

Requirements

  • Minimum of 40 hours of instrument time
    • Time previously logged for the PPL, Night Rating, or CPL may count toward this
  • Complete a dual cross-country of at least 100 nautical miles, under simulated or actual IFR conditions
  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada written and flight test

This entry-level position is a fast track to a career in aviation. The high standard we train to helps our students excel in their aviation career, wherever that ultimately takes them. Our Pilot Examiner is one of the few in Canada that can provide a flight test for this rating.

Instructor Rating

Prerequisites

  • Must hold a Commercial Pilot Licence
  • Minimum 18-years-old (flight test can be held on your birthday)
  • Category 1 Medical Certificate as issued by Transport Canada
  • Working knowledge of English

Requirements

  • Minimum 30 hours of dual instruction
  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada written and flight test

Multi-engine Rating

  • Minimum aircraft time: 8 hours
  • Additional Instructor time: 10 hours

This course can be taken as a stand-alone upgrade course. This is often done by our business owner students who are upgrading to bigger and/or more capable aircraft. This course can also be integrated into the Commercial Pilot Licence to allow career students to make the best use of their training dollars.

Multi-engine Rating

Prerequisites

  • Must hold a Private Pilot Licence

Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Transport Canada flight test
    • No written test
    • Complete required exercises as per Transport Canada’s Flight Test Guide.
